Academics from Bournemouth University (BU) will be leading discussions on international tourism and sports tourism at this year's World Travel Market.
Experts from BU’s International Centre for Tourism & Hospitality Research (ICTHR) will host the annual Tourism Futures Forum on Thursday 11 November at the four-day global event for travel industry professionals, which last year was attended by over 45,000 visitors.
The Forum brings together leading academic and professional tourism experts from around the world to facilitate debate about new industry trends as well as opportunities and challenges.
Proceedings will be directed by Professor Dimitrios Buhalis, who is Deputy Director of ICTHR, and an invited panel of experts will lead the interactive debate.
Professor Buhalis said: “This annual event has become one of the key highlights of the World Travel Market. Since it is the last event of the show participants debate all the key tourism trends and developments with the panel.”
Professor Alan Fyall and Professor Adam Blake will both deliver research-based presentations on market trends and economic recovery during the discussion.
And Dr Richard Shipway, Senior Lecturer in Sports Studies, has been invited to sit on the panel of WTM’s Sports Tourism event which will examine critical issues and problems in sports tourism.
Dr Shipway will sit alongside other speakers including South Africa’s Minister of Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk, Head of Visit Britain’s 2012 Games Unit Chris Foy, and Executive Director of the European Tour Operators Association Tom Jenkins.
Among the topics up for discussion during the session, which is sponsored by Eurosport, will be the impacts of hosting international sporting events and problems such as scheduling risks and ticket pricing.
The World Travel Market runs from Monday 8 November to Thursday 11 November at ExCeL in London. The Tourism Futures Forum runs from 2pm to 4pm on Thursday 11 November and is free of charge, but entry to the World Travel Market should be arranged in advanced. Dr Shipway will be speaking at the Sports Tourism event on Monday 8 November from 3pm to 4.30pm.
