Our staff are all respected academics with extensive experience and engagement with industry, commerce, research, applied research and consultancy. They publish widely in international journals and several have authored the leading textbooks in their subject areas. Dr Keith WilkesKeith’s career has taken him from University College, Swansea to doctoral research at University of Liverpool and then to BU, where he’s become a key figure in the life of the School and the wider University over the past 20 years.

Keith has risen up through the ranks at BU, holding key positions which encompass course development and quality, the student experience, enterprise and income generation and staff management.

Professor Alan FyallMost people would jump at the chance to turn a lifelong passion into a successful career, and Professor Alan Fyall is one person who has managed to do just that.

As a child, Alan was lucky enough to travel extensively with his parents and remembers being encouraged to “take a worldly view of things, to experience and enjoy other countries.”

Professor John FletcherProfessor John Fletcher is an internationally renowned economist, highly regarded for his pioneering work in tourism impact and development research.

He is the author of numerous articles and book chapters including co-author of the leading textbook, ‘Tourism Principles and Practice’, now in its 4th edition.

Professor Dimitrios BuhalisAn internationally renowned researcher, Professor Dimitrios Buhalis is one of the world’s most cited academics – and don’t just take his word for it.

Dimitrios specialises in e-Tourism and advises on the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) which is revolutionising the tourism business for countries, companies and us – the consumer.

Keith HaymanWith more than 20 years of experience in higher education, Keith Hayman has a lot to offer Bournemouth University (BU).

But he didn't have the easiest of starts in the world of academia. Securing a place at university proved to be the biggest challenge he's ever had.

Philip AlfordDr Philip Alford's role at Bournemouth University (BU) is a far cry from your average nine-to-five desk job.

His work has taken him all over the world, from attending conferences in Singapore and Geneva, to teaching in Paris as a visiting professor.

David KilburnDavid Kilburn's years spent working in the world of business means he has the first-hand experience vital to the role of Head of Business Development.

After rising up through the ranks of the retail industry and running his own business for years, a step into academia proved the right move to build on his expertise.

Jeffery BrayAs a graduate of BU's Retail Management programme, it's clear Jeff Bray's passion for the subject remains as strong as ever.

Now a Senior Lecturer in Marketing and Retail Management and Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Retail Management, Jeff is perfect proof of what our graduates go on to achieve.

Dr Richard ShipwayWith sport and travel among his lifelong interests, becoming a lecturer in sports studies seemed a natural career path for Richard.

Among his current research interests are sport tourism, Olympic studies, the impacts and legacies of sport events, sport volunteering, health promotion, and sport ethnography.

Caroline JacksonAfter a career spanning almost 10 years, Caroline joined BU to develop her research interests in the areas of leisure, events and the consumer experience.

Caroline was also involved in establishing the UK Association for Events Management Education (AEME) in collaboration with other Higher Education and industry providers of events education.

Dr Julie WhitfieldDr Julie Whitfield is a specialist in conference and events management with a vast amount of international experience.

Julie took up her most recent post at BU in 2005. Her research interests examine the introduction and implementation of green policies within conference venues.

Joanna HawkesJoanna has a wealth of professional and academic experience that she brings to her position as Demonstrator in Sports Management at BU.

Joanna joined BU in 2009, and delivers lectures in a host of programmes ranging from Sports Development & Coaching Science to Sports Psychology.

Miguel MoitalMiguel has a wealth of academic experience in Portugal and the UK, and gained his PhD in Tourism from Bournemouth University.

Before his association with BU, Miguel developed his knowledge in Event and Tourism management at the Estoril Higher Institute for Tourism and Hotel Studies in Portugal.
