How we plan for the future

The university budgets to enable us to reinvest in improving the student, staff and visitor experience.

We are continually investing in our academic community at BU. Academic staff numbers (FTE - full time equivalent) increased by 5% between May 2017 and May 2018 and by 40% between 2012 and 2018. The proportion of female Professors has also increased from 19% in 2012 to 35% in 2017. In 2015, we were recognised for our achievement and committment to tackling gender equality in Higher Education with the Athena SWAN Bronze Award.

We are proud of our campuses and the facilities that we offer. However, we are also aware that in order to keep our standards high, we need to invest in infrastructure and in new buildings, in order to continue to meet the needs of our students and staff.

In 2016 we opened the £22 million Fusion Building which includes 27 new seminar rooms, three lecture theatres, research space, a 24-station PC lab, rooftop terraces and numerous catering facilities, all topped with a glass-domed roof. This is a physical representation of our vision of Fusion: to create the most stimulating, challenging and rewarding university experience in a world-class learning community. The Fusion Building is our most environmentally sustainable building to date. Achieving an Energy Performance Certificate rating of A and BREEAM Excellent, it features a range of the latest technologies designed to reduce its impact.

This followed the opening of the £10.5 million Student Centre in 2015. The six-storey building is primarily designed as a hub for students to meet informally for study-related activities, for clubs and societies, and for social purposes. It contains a range of communal and collaborative learning spaces and bookable meeting rooms, as well as catering facilities and access points for student services. It is also the new home of the Students’ Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU) – containing the SUBU offices, student advice centre and activities hub with new radio studios for Nerve student media.

We are continuing to invest in our campus with two major new university buildings currently under construction – Poole Gateway and Bournemouth Gateway.

Both will provide the latest specialist facilities for our faculties, helping us to deliver first-class teaching and research for students and staff and to meet the needs of new and collaborative ways of working.
