Studying tourism and hospitality with us

The department is home to one of the largest communities of tourism and hospitality undergraduate and postgraduate students in the world. We have international expertise and a reputation for excellence in education, research and professional practice. Our courses combine academic rigour with industry relevance. They equip you with knowledge of leading-edge concepts and issues, techniques and case studies in the fields of tourism and hospitality management.

A blend of lectures, seminars, field trips, live projects and simulations, and online resources (blogs, discussion forums, etc) are used to assist you in applying theory to real-world contexts. The emphasis is on collaboration and co-creation. You will become an active and valued member of our community of learners.

We have excellent links with industry. Our partners are a valuable source of high-calibre guest speakers, consultancy projects, and careers presentations and workshops. They range from multinational businesses such as Hilton and Merlin Entertainments, to small and medium-sized enterprises in the region, industry associations, public bodies and agencies, and voluntary/third-sector organisations. Many of our industry partners are alumni of our courses.

Issues of sustainability and responsibility, ethics and ethical decision-making and global citizenship are embedded throughout the curriculum. All of our undergraduate students complete a year-long industry placement. Placements are available to our postgraduate students as an option within their programme. Our employability rates are among the highest in the sector. Our programmes also include the option to study overseas with one of our 40 partner institutions, as part of a student exchange.

Teaching and learning is informed by the published research of academic staff in the department - including the authors of some of the leading textbooks and most frequently cited journal articles in the field. With the assistance and encouragement of enthusiastic, research-active and professionally-connected staff, you will develop into a professional practitioner, capable of working in complex and unpredictable circumstances.

We seek to inspire and empower you to challenge current thinking and accepted practice in a critical and constructive manner. We give you the tools to gather, use and evaluate information, so that you can create and share subject-specific knowledge and make effective, evidence-based decisions in relevant professional contexts.
