Track chairs: Luiz Mendes-Filho, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Alexandre Biz, Universidade Federal do Paraná and  Alessandro Inversini, University of Reading

Tourism has often been described as an economic driving force that contributes to rural and emerging economies’ development. However, when it comes to the social aspect of development, the nature of this contribution is still debated by academics. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can help enhance the socio-economic contribution of tourism by fostering independent community-based tourism marketing and sales dis-intermediation. eTourism for Development (eT4D), combines tourism studies, development studies, and information and communication technologies. eT4D can be defined as the independent use of technologies by micro and small community based tourism firms to market and sell their products and services, fostering local socio-economic development in emerging/developing countries. This theme includes the following topics:

  • ICTs and Socio-Economic Development
  • ICTs, Tourism and Poverty Alleviation
  • Community Based Tourism and the use of ICTs
  • ICTs in Community Based Tourism Marketing
  • ICTs in Community Based Tourism Management
  • Digital Co-Creation in Community Based Tourism
  • Big Data and Community Based Tourism
