Instilling a passion for learning

Our work with primary schools

Thinking about higher education (HE) shouldn't just start when learners are coming towards the end of their time at secondary school. We believe that instilling a passion for learning in primary-age children is one of the best ways to encourage them to consider HE when they get older.

Our primary programme is tailored to capture the imaginations of younger children and to raise awareness of further and higher education in your primary school.

Key Stage 2: University and Subject Workshops

We run a selection of workshops with an aim to take children on a learning journey, teaching them about things like life choices and decision making, and introducing them to some of the vocabulary used in Higher Education. We also have a number of sessions which focus on subject-specific activities to raise awareness of study options and careers.

Below are the workshops we currently offer to our partner schools.

  • Future Me
  • Fantastic Jurassic
  • Animation Creation
  • Writing Wizardry
  • Epic Genetics

Each workshop is designed to last for two hours, but can be adapted to fit with your school day. Workshops are delivered by experienced staff members and supported by our dedicated Student Ambassadors, who can share their experiences of being a university student with your class.

Books & Stories

Books & Stories is a 10-week reading scheme that is aimed at pupils in Years 6. We offer one-hour sessions, once a week, designed to improve reading attainment and attitudes towards reading. The sessions are led by Student Ambassadors who act as positive role models and support pupils with guided reading. This fun and engaging scheme also increases reluctant pupils’ self-esteem and motivation.

Our Books and Stories scheme is available to a limited number of local primary schools, our team will be in touch with you.

Our work with families

We know that to bring learning to life, it needs to happen beyond the classroom - and the whole family should be involved!

If your son or daughter attends a primary school that we work with, you and your family will be invited to one of our Family Showcase events. These take place on campus once per term and include a variety of interactive workshops and activities that you can take part in. At our last event, families learnt all about robotics, animation and TV production!

We also provide tea and coffee for parents and garden games for the younger members of your family, so there really is something for everyone.

Our showcase dates for next year are to be confirmed, but keep an eye on this webpage for updates.
