Join our online Hedgehog Survey Training followed by a real on-campus hedgehog survey!
Surveying for hedgehogs on our campus is not only great fun but understanding where hedgehogs are (and crucially where they aren’t) is also a really important step in our journey to becoming a Hedgehog Friendly Campus. It can help us decide what action to take next to protect and invite in our spiky friends!
What can I take part in?
Hedgehog Friendly Campus are offering a free two hour workshop from 11am to 1pm on Monday 27th September. The workshop will demonstrate how to find out if there are any hedgehogs using our campuses and give you the chance to get involved in a campus survey. The workshop is suitable for anyone who wants to learn more about hedgehog behaviour and ecology, or simply wants to do something a little different!
We’ll then set up the hedgehog tunnels after the workshop in time for our survey, which will last until Saturday 2nd October. Daily recordings will be taken at 10am each day at our tunnel locations outside Bournemouth Gateway Building on Lansdowne Campus and outside Talbot House on Talbot Campus and will last around 15 minutes each.
You can sign up to the online workshop as well as to be a volunteer for the daily recordings by completing this sign-up form.
Students who get involved in the campus survey can receive a certificate and CV reference from Hedgehog Friendly Campus for taking part.
How does the survey work?
We will build and use small mammal footprint tunnels to find where hedgehogs are active. Tunnels are baited with tasty cat food to encourage animals inside, where they tread in a black, non-toxic ink. As they exit, footprints are left for us to identify. Leaving baited tunnels out for 5 consecutive nights will give us a very high level of certainty regarding hedgehog presence or absence (whether hedgehogs are present in the area).
The footprint tunnel survey is really easy. Watch this video in full to see the basics.
I don’t know much about hedgehogs… does that matter?
Not at all! In fact, that’s the point. Hedgehog Friendly Campus will talk you through it all, and give you plenty of chance to ask questions so all levels of hedgehog awareness are welcome!
How do I sign up?
You can sign up for the workshop and for individual days of the hedgehog survey using this sign-up form.
