BU is teaming up with BCP and Beryl Bikes to offer students a free National Standard Cycling Course.
This course is for those who wish to brush up on their cycle skills. The course will offer bike handling skills taught on local roads and will aim to ensure cyclists are able to manage all traffic conditions. The course will include cycling a route between university campus sites.
When and where will the course be held?
The course will be run on the following dates

1pm - 4pm
Meet in Poole House Reception, Talbot Campus
How do I book onto a course?
There are limited places available on the course, so pre-booking is essential. Please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve a place. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. You will be notified If there are no places available and you will be given the option of being allocated onto a waiting/reserve list.
Do I need a bike to take part?
Attendees will be able to choose between using their own bike or using a courtesy bike provided by Beryl Bikes.
If you choose to use a Beryl Bike, you will be asked to sign up to a Beryl Bike account in advance, but there will be no charge for using the Beryl Bike on the training course.
Course instructors will check all bikes before the course to check that bikes are roadworthy. A Beryl Bike will be provided if any individual bikes are deemed unsafe for use.
Why should I do this course?
The free courses are designed to help build confidence and to help you to stay safe whilst cycling. In addition cyclists that complete each course will receive the following:
A ‘high vis’ backpack cover and bike lights courtesy of BCP
Route planning apps information, to help you plan your cycle journeys
All participants who complete the training will be rewarded with a choice of:
100 minute Beryl Bike bundle, or
£15 cycle voucher accessory for Hope 2 Cycle, for the purchase of cycle helmet or light set.
What will I need to bring with me to do a course?
Suitable clothing and shoes must be worn – this might include gloves and waterproofs if the weather is wet and cold
Bring a snack and drink
We advise that you wear a helmet. If you choose not to wear a helmet, you will be required to sign a disclaimer form, stating that you have chosen not to wear a helmet and this is at your own risk
If you intend to use our own bike, you must have working lights.
After you have completed a course, you will be asked to complete a short feedback form, which will be used to plan future cycle courses
If you book onto a course, please make sure you attend. The courses will run in bad weather unless conditions are judged to be dangerous. Each place on the training course costs the university £35 to provide.
If you can no longer make the session please inform the Travel Plan Group so they can offer your place to someone on the waiting list.
