What are we doing?
To ensure our printing service is compatible with the latest operating systems from Microsoft and Apple, the current print management system needs to be upgraded. The first stage - which takes place from Wednesday 7 December - is to move across the large Xerox printer/copier/scanner Multifunction Devices (MFDs) to the new system. The smaller desktop Xerox ColourQubes and Phasers will be migrated from Monday 12 December.
In order to print successfully it is necessary to use the correct printer queue. The current default setting is configured the ORLANDO queue. This will change to use a new queue called DOHA.
Why are we doing it?
The upgrade is necessary to ensure that the service will remain reliable and compliant, with increased performance and to provide support for newer devices and operating systems.
Who will this affect?
This will affect both staff and students who use these printers.
All of the printers have to be visited individually, as it is not possible to move them across to the new system all together. Therefore, there will be a cross-over period when the default setting in Windows and Apple OSX is incorrect and the correct printer queue will need to be selected manually.
What will I need to do?
On Wednesday 7 December both queues will be made available for selection. The default printer queue will be set to ORLANDO, as it is now. On Thursday 8 December the default printer queue will be set to DOHA. Please check the schedule below to see when the printers will be migrated. Printers will have a label physically attached to them with 'DOHA' written on it as they are moved across to the new system.
The process is simple from a library or OAC BU Windows PC:
Information for students
Student Scenario 1:
If you’re using a BU Windows PC in the Sir Michael Cobham Library on the morning of Wednesday 7 December, the printers will be in the process of being migrated. Unless the printer has a DOHA label on it, they should print to the default ORLANDO queue as normal. It will also be possible to pick up the print job from a printer in a building that hadn't been migrated.
Student Scenario 2:
If you’re using a BU Windows PC in Poole House on Friday 9 December will find that the default printer setting is now set to DOHA. However, the Poole House printers are not scheduled to be moved until the Monday 12 December. In order to pick up the print job from a printer in Poole House it will be necessary to select the ORLANDO queue. It will also be possible to go to a printer that has already been migrated, such as printers in the library.
