Bournemouth University is a great place to cycle. Located between the New Forest and the Purbecks, and with its miles of promenade, Bournemouth offers a great location to jump on two wheels, whether you are commuting to university or cycling for leisure.
The BU Travel Plan has a number of great measures to encourage safe cycling by student and staff to enable active travel to/from and between campuses. Here are some of the offers for the start of term:
Free bike safety training
- Through the new BU Travel Plan, the university is teaming up with BCP and Beryl Bikes to offer students the following bespoke cycle training:
- Basic National Standard Cycling Course – funded by BU
- Advanced National Standard Cycling Course – funded by BCP
Both courses will encompass a route between the Talbot and Lansdowne Campus to help you plan for your regular commute.
The courses will run on Wednesday afternoons at Talbot Campus in October. There are a limited number of places available.
All students who complete a training course will be rewarded with a choice of:
- 200 minute Beryl Bike bundle
- £15 cycle voucher accessory for Hope 2 Cycle, for the purchase of cycle helmet or light set.
To book your place on the course, please contact [email protected] . Places will be filled on first come, first serviced basis. Further courses will be provided if there is sufficient demand.

BU by bike scheme
Find out about the university bike scheme BU by Bike, which aims to make cycling at BU more accessible and gives you the opportunity to cycle without splashing out a lot of money for a bike. There are a limited number of bikes available for 2019/20.
Keeping your bike safe
The university offers a number of secure compounds for securing your bike. You can get access to the secure cycle compounds which are available at both Talbot and Lansdowne Campuses by presenting your student ID card to the card reader on the compound door.
We recommend that you always lock your bike with a gold standard D lock. These are available to buy in the Talbot Campus Student Union shop at the subsidised cost of £10.
Shower, changing and locker facilities
There are lockers, changing rooms and showers available for students and staff, find out more about the cycle facilities on campus.
The Bike Doctor
The university offers a free monthly Bike Doctor repair service to assist you with any bike related technical problems. The Bike Doctor service will be visiting both Talbot and Lansdowne campuses on a monthly basis. The 2019/20 calendar can be found on the BU webpage .
