Message from Professor Richard Conder, Chair of the University Board

Dear Applicant,

I am so pleased that you are interested in joining the Board of Bournemouth University. In writing these few words of introduction I hope to give you a sense of what it is like to be a member of our Board and our University and to encourage you to make an application.

I have had the unique privilege of being associated with Bournemouth University in a number of different capacities for nearly forty years and in that time have seen it develop and grow from a small, locally based Institute of Higher Education to the world class, internationally recognised centre of excellence that it is today. Rated as one of the top, young universities in the world it offers a curriculum that is innovative, outward facing and fit for the twenty first century combining as it does a fusion of education, research and professional practice. In a number of areas our staff undertake research which is truly unique, and our graduates have a very strong record of employment and career progression.

The University’s vision is to inspire learning, advance knowledge and enrich society and our four core values; excellence, inclusivity, creativity and responsibility influence everything that we do and indeed the way in which we work together as a Board.

We warmly welcome colleagues who have a wide range of experiences and are committed to increasing the diversity of our Board. That wide range of experience and knowledge amongst Board members produces a very refreshing, challenging and exciting environment for all Board members who can genuinely feel that they are involved in leading and shaping an organisation that has the ability, resources and commitment to change lives and society for the better.

In joining the BU Board, you will be helping to shape the next steps in the development of this institution. The culture of our University encourages Board members to work closely with senior management in the development and delivery of our strategic objectives and equally provides many opportunities for Board members to meet a wide range of staff and students. There are many occasions when Board members can witness the University in action and join in celebrating the success of our staff and students which are always very happy and uplifting experiences.

For myself being a part of the Board of Bournemouth University has been one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences of my professional life. I hope that you will give serious consideration to making an application to join us. I can assure you that you will be made to feel very welcome.
