Want to help protect the planet?

Recycling is a great way to be sustainable and we have hundreds of bins across the university campus so there's no excuse, so here's your complete guide what you can recycle and where you can recycle it.

Recycling in student residences and around Bournemouth and Poole

If you're recycling at home, in halls or your own accommodation, then you can recycle the following items in the big black (or blue in the Student Village at Talbot Campus) wheelie bins located in the waste area close to every student residence and in your kerbside recycling bin at home:

  • Mixed paper and card Plastics Large tins Mixed glass (Bottles and Jars)
  • Newspapers All plastics bottles Food tins and drink cans All bottles and jars e.g. wine bottles, mayonnaise jars, jam jars
  • Magazines, catalogues and telephone directories Plastic bottle tops Aerosols No plastic bags
  • Junk mail PET, HDPE PVC
  • Cardboard
  • Junk mail, shredded paper and envelopes
  • Books

Please don't add the following:

  • Wet paper
  • Plastic bags
  • Aluminium foil
  • Foil trays
  • Light bulbs
  • Mirror glass
  • Pyrex
  • Window glass

Please put your recycling in loose, that means no plastic bags! The bin men won't empty the bin if there's a plastic bag. That means everybody's hard work goes to waste, literally!

All other rubbish should be placed in the general waste bins provided. Rubbish will be collected weekly and recycling will be collected fortnightly.

On campus and academic buildings

If you're on campus (not including the Student Village) or in any BU academic building you can recycle a few extra items including plastic sandwich packs, juice cartons, foil and yogurt pots. These can go in the large green wheelie bins or any of the mixed recycling bins around the campus.

You will also find bins for white paper recycling in offices, PC labs and Open Access Centres on campus. All recycling bins should be clearly labelled.

BU and Chartwell's have teamed up to recycle even more, all food waste from the refectory is now sent to a local composting site, and we are working to take that out in to the customer areas soon.

Recycling in the student union

If you're in and around any of the SUBU shops either on the Talbot Campus or in Bournemouth House on the Lansdowne Campus you can recycle all your batteries. If you visit the Student Union reception above Dylan's bar you can also recycle:

  • CDs
  • Old mobile phones
  • Ink cartridges
  • Spectacles and sunglasses
