Welcome events for international students

Thursday 19, Friday 20, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September 2019
Executive Business Centre (EBC), Lansdowne Campus

Coming to study in a new country for the first time can be challenging and we want to help you settle in and start enjoying your time at BU as quickly as possible.

We know that every student is different. Of course, if you’re arriving in the UK for the first time, you might need a bit of extra help and you will probably have more questions than a student who is already familiar with living in the UK.

On the main arrivals days, Thursday 19, Friday 20, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September 2019 we’ve organised the following activities that might be of particular interest to you if you’re a new international student:

“New to the UK” welcome events

Thursday 19, Friday 20, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September: 14.00 – 15.30 every day
EBC, Lansdowne Campus

You’ll find our “New to the UK” welcome events really helpful if you haven’t lived in the UK before and you want some friendly advice about the practical things that you need to organise in your first few days in Bournemouth. These events are also a great way to meet other new international students who will understand how you’re feeling!

We repeat the events every day – you only need to attend one. We recommend that you attend the event that takes place on the day you arrive, or the next day.

Here’s approximately what you can expect:

  • A warm welcome
  • Basic information about:
    • How to use the local and university buses
    • Where to shop
    • Tips for overcoming homesickness
    • Key events and activities in your first week at BU
    • Ideas for places to go to meet other new students and make friends.
  • A chance to ask questions.

Café Culture

Thursday 19, Friday 20, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September: 18.00 – 20.00 every day
EBC, Lansdowne Campus

Every evening there will be a social event, with a cultural flavour, for you to attend. EVERYONE is welcome. Each event will have a different theme and activity, but they will always include:

  • Free food and drink
  • No alcohol
  • An activity to help you get to know other new students
  • A chance to celebrate and share different cultures from around the world.

These events will also happen at other times later in the term and we hope you’ll continue to join us!

Café Culture LATE

Thursday 19, Friday 20, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September: 20.00 – 22.00 every day
EBC, Lansdowne Campus

The café on the ground floor of the EBC will be open from 8-10pm each evening to give you a relaxed space to socialise, with hot drinks and snacks on sale. Ideal if you want a chilled out evening, rather than a big party!

International Commencement Ceremony

You’re also invited to attend the International Commencement Ceremony on the evening of Thursday 26 September. You’ll need to book your ticket in advance.

Take a look at the 2018 International Commencement Ceremony page to get an idea of the special evening we have planned for you. We will contact you during the summer with your invitation and information about how to book your ticket for this year’s event which will be held on Thursday 26 September 2019.
