Physiotherapy suite

Our physiotherapy suite has been designed to give you access to all the equipment you need to develop your practical skills related to the treatment of musculoskeletal, cardiac, respiratory and neurological conditions.

As well as practising on one another, we also have real patients visiting our facilities from rehabilitation centres, allowing you to progress your training under supervision. Our physiotherapy suite features a range of equipment, including:

  • Plinths with adjustable bed heights, ensuring correct positioning and safe working practice for you and your patients
  • Three large Bobath plinths that are used to practise moving and handling techniques that may require up to four therapists for a severely neurologically impaired patient
  • Hand tables for practising hand therapy skills
  • Audio-visual equipment to quickly and easily record gait and movement for motion analysis
  • Electrotherapy equipment, enabling you to practise the application of ultrasound, interferential, pulsed short wave diathermy, TENS, wax baths, heat and ice
  • Model skeletons that are used to teach skeletal anatomy
  • Respiratory and brain anatomy models, which are used in line with the simulator models to practise a range of techniques, including suctioning for respiratory care
  • Full-body simulator models that make sounds in response to treatments. These are predominantly used to simulate the treatment of patients within an intensive care unit
  • Exercise equipment to enable you to practise exercise prescription
  • Validated measurement tools, such as dynamometers, pressure biofeedback, expiratory volume meters and goniometers to allow you to practise measurement of treatment effects.

Our physiotherapy suite has ceiling-mounted cameras to record your training sessions, giving you the opportunity to watch yourself at work and reflect on your practise. You’ll be given the images on your own memory stick, and these recordings are also used for assessment purposes.

You’ll also have access to the physiology labs in Bournemouth House, which are used to help you learn about specific lung function and cardiac function measurement.

In relation to exercise prescription, we hold skills sessions at our Talbot Campus using the sports facilities at SportBU, including the sports hall and astro area, as these facilities allow more space for teaching exercise prescription.
