Interview information for Design applicants

So that you are fully prepared to come along and discuss your application with us, we’ve put together some information to help you prepare for the day. Remember, this is a good opportunity for you to find out more about your course and BU too.

If you are applying for one of the following courses you will be asked to attend a 1-to-1 meeting with one of the teaching team as part of the selection process:

Overseas applicants who meet the academic criteria but who are unable to attend an interview day will be asked to submit a portfolio online for review, and will also be asked to undertake an online interview with the teaching team.

What happens on the day?

You are welcome to bring a friend or relative along on the day. They will be able to attend all the presentations, but for your 1-to-1 you will be by yourself.

In the morning there will be an optional talk about BU’s accommodation options, fees and funding your degree, and tours of Talbot Campus. Everyone will need to attend the afternoon sessions, during which you will attend a presentation about Design courses at BU, and a more in-depth presentation on the course you have applied to. Our student ambassadors will be on hand to chat to you in an informal setting whilst you are waiting to see a member of the academic team, and will also take you on a guided tour of the labs and workshops.

How does the process work?

You will spend about 15 minutes with a member of the academic team on an individual basis. We'd like you to bring a portfolio of work, which may be used as the basis of your discussion with one of our academics.

We want to ensure you can demonstrate the right aptitude and have the right educational background for the course you have applied for. If you are successful, you will be made a verbal offer of a place on the day, which will be followed up formally.

What do I need to bring with me?

For Product Design courses, a good overview of your creative work. For example: drawings, school projects as well as projects outside of school. We want to see creative ability, problem solving and maybe some evidence of model making or workshop activity.

Design Engineering - examples of any technical work you have created. This could be science or technology related, from a school or external project at any level.

Where and when will interviews be held?

All interview events will be held on Talbot Campus - you'll find maps, directions and postcodes for satnav users here.
Please note there is limited parking on Talbot Campus, which is pay and display.

The date and time of your interview session will be available through myHub, and you will receive details of how to access myHub once you have applied to BU.

What about additional learning support?

In accordance with Bournemouth University’s Dignity, Diversity and Equality Policy, please do not hesitate to contact us if you require additional support with physical access, audio content, or have visual-specific requirements. We have a dedicated additional learning support team and will do our utmost to meet your requirements. If you have been diagnosed with any additional learning needs and did not indicate as such on your UCAS form, please inform us now, so we are aware.

And finally

The dress code is smart casual.

Please note that applicants attend these sessions at their own cost and BU is not able to refund any expenses incurred.
