MA Marketing Communications Practice

This part-time MA course is designed to be flexible so that you can follow it without taking a break from your professional work.

Each unit is delivered via a two-day intensive residential followed by online learning support, so the requirement for you to be on campus is minimal, but you will enjoy the benefits of meeting your cohort face to face, which helps to create a community of practice in the online phases.

The MA consists of six specialist units from the Build your own MA framework, that can also be studied as stand alone short courses, plus the Master’s Project and Exhibition units. Applications should be made for each individual unit of study; find out more about how to apply

The course is aimed at media and marketing professionals seeking to explore emerging issues in marketing communications. You will be equipped with key concepts, theories, and current thinking which will enable you to engage critically with areas of marketing communications, such as branding, integrated marketing, word of mouth, and relationship marketing. Assignments are negotiated to ensure that you are able to research and develop insights in areas relevant to your own professional practice.

Entry requirements:

This course is open to media professionals with an undergraduate degree and the required work experience in a relevant industry and to non-graduates with significant and relevant work experience who can demonstrate an ability to both complete and benefit from the course.

International entry requirements:

If English is not your first language you'll need IELTS 7.0 (Academic) with minimum 6.5 in writing and 6.0 in the other 3 components or equivalent. For more information check out our international entry requirements.

Course details

On this course you will usually be taught by a range of staff with relevant expertise and knowledge appropriate to the content of the unit. This will include senior academic staff, qualified professional practitioners, demonstrators and technicians.

Entry requirements

How you study

Each unit begins with a two-day creative retreat, typically a Friday and Saturday in Bournemouth, which gives you a chance to meet your fellow students and engage with the academic team. It will be an intensive two days but a valuable learning experience, giving you the opportunity to share ideas with like-minded professionals.

The retreat provides a firm foundation for the following seven weeks during which you will further develop your knowledge and explore the concepts in more detail - using our online learning environment and discussion forums. The supported online study helps to prepare you for the academic assignment (equivalent to 5000 words), the specific subject matter and content of which is determined by your interests and professional context. On successful completion of this assignment you will be awarded 20 academic credits (level 7 at Master's/Postgraduate level).

Complete three of the units (60 level 7 credits) to achieve a Postgraduate Certificate, six units (120 level 7 credits) for a Postgraduate Diploma or go on to take the Masters Project (40 level 7 credits) and Exhibition (20 level 7 credits) for a full Masters in Marketing Communications Practice (180 level 7 credits).
