MSc Robotics

Robotic System:  During this unit you will be introduced to the analysis, design and implementation of robotic systems including kinematic, mechanisms, and their use for robot structures. You will also be equipped with the skills to undertake the challenging task of designing robotic systems that are deployed in a wide range of application.

Robotic Control Design: Learn how to critically evaluate a real time mechatronic control system requirement, analyse the results and choose an appropriate real time control architecture and software paradigm for a particular robotic application.

Research Methods: This unit aims to develop the student’s key research skills in areas such as literature reviews, critical analysis of research findings, project proposals, planning, experiment design and analysis, and dissemination. You will also learn about the professional standards and ethical issues in research, preparing you for writing a project proposal and for conducting and disseminating the Masters project.

Computer Vision: This unit focuses on a number of Computer Vision techniques, ranging from traditional approaches established over many decades of research, to the latest state-of-the-art developments, together with appropriate tools. The unit entails a strong empirical element where Computer Vision models will be built and evaluated.

Applied Programming for Data Science: Gain a critical understanding of data science principles and approaches to analyse noisy, random, structured and unstructured data. You will also gain hands on experience and develop practical skills to design and implement solutions to address real-world data science challenges through the use of relevant programming tools and techniques

Knowledge Transfer: You will gain an in-depth critical understanding of the methods and processes of knowledge transfer.  The unit will consider the historicity of the higher education landscape and its contemporary space as a supplier of knowledge as well as that developed within the commercial sector. Students will, therefore, investigate the potential to source knowledge and its value to business as a means of gaining competitive advantage. 

Engineering Individual Master Project: The unit brings together the taught programme, recent research findings and industrial experiences within the context of a substantial, independently-conducted piece of work. You will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge of philosophy, methodologies and techniques of research relating to engineering design, critically investigate and report on a particular technical engineering design issue in depth, engage with complex issues and present an analytically rigorous and well-argued case, develop key research skills in areas such as literature reviews, critical analysis of research findings, project proposals, planning, experiment design and engineering analysis

The normal entry requirements for embarking on this degree are:

Bachelors Honours degree with 2:2 or equivalent. 
• Engineering, Physics or a related sciences undergraduates’ degree

• India: Bachelor’s degree (4 years) from a recognised HE institution with a minimum overall result of 55% 
• Nigeria:  Bachelor's degree from a recognised institution with a minimum classification of 2:2 
• China:  Chinese Bachelor's (Honours) degree from a recognised higher education institution with 65% or above 
• Turkey: Bachelor’s degree (Lisans Diplomasi - four years) with a minimum overall GPA of 2.3/4.0 
• Vietnam:  Bachelor's degree/Bang tot nghiep dai hoc with an average score of 6.5/10, or 2.25/4, or a Master’s degree/Thac si. 

All applications will be subject to a minimum grade and your degree may need to be in a relevant subject area.

Applicants may be invited to interview if they do not have a Psychology degree accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). 

English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you will need to provide evidence that you understand English to a satisfactory level. English language requirements for this course are normally:

IELTS 6.0 (Academic) with a minimum of 5.5 in all components, or equivalent.

While all aspects of the programme, including required field trips, are included in the fee, additional, optional or extra curricula activities may be available for which a student contribution is required.

If you need to repeat one or more units during the course of your studies (with or without attendance) the pricing will be pro-rata of the full-time fee.

International (not Rep. of Ireland) students need to pay a non-refundable deposit to secure their place on a postgraduate course. For September 2024 and January 2025 entry, a £5,000 deposit is required. You will need to pay your deposit by the date stated in your offer letter. The remainder of your fee will be payable on registration/enrolment. There are two exceptions to the non-refundable rule on the deposit:

• You fail to meet the academic or English requirements of your offer
• You are refused a visa to enter the UK, provided the reason for the refusal is not a fraudulent application.

Roya Haratian is Senior Fellow of Higher Education Academy, Charted Engineer (CEng) with UK Engineering Council and Principal Academic in Electronic Science and Engineering at Department of Design and Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology, Bournemouth University - UK. She is leader of Athena SWAN, which is AdvanvceHE Gender Equality Charter, and Inclusivity Process within the department which has led to successful Athena SWAN Bronze Award in 2021.

She is covering multidisciplinary topics such as Mechatronics and Control System Design for final year undergraduate and master programs and interested in research area mainly under umbrella of these topics with application in different industries whereas she is leading the Mechatronics/Electronics route of department's curriculum from L4, L5, L6 and L7.

The world of robots fascinates me so robotics is my prime area of research. Even though I am keen on every aspects of robotics, my current research interests are mainly focused on dexterous robot hand and tactile sensors for specialised applications. This together with intelligent interfaces can be used for variety of end-user applications. This is intended to relieve operators from monotonous and potentially hazardous working environments for safety and security. A showcase to this is the development of a multi-fingered robotic hand for Atomic Weapons Establishment of Ministry of Defence.

Dr. Mihai Dupac obtained a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the West University of Timisoara, Romania, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, at Auburn University (https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/auburn-university), AL, in the United States.

Six PhD students graduated under his supervision based on the research funding and collaborations with AECC (Anglo European College of Chiropractic), Bournemouth Hospital, and Hydreco Hydraulics. He was acting as an examiner/chair for more than 10 PhD/MPhil examinations and transfers. He is the author of more than 100 publications and 4 books in the field of engineering namely Statics with Matlab, Springer, 2013, Advanced Dynamics: Analytical and Numerical Calculations with Matlab, Springer, 2012, Machine Component Analysis with Matlab, Elsevier, Butterworth-Heinemann, 2019, and Engineering Applications: Analytical and Numerical Calculation with MATLAB, Wiley, 2021.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA - UK), a reviewer for Mathematical Reviews (MatSciNet, US), a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME - USA), and an Honorary Researcher at the University of Craiova (Faculty of Mechanics), Romania (2020-2021). He was involved in the delivery of external courses for aircraft industry employees and acted as a program review panel member (external) of the BEng (Hons) Engineering Top-up (2019) accreditation.

Mehran has many years experience as a designer and has interests in design methods, manufacturing, material selection and applied technology. He is an active member of the Design Simulation Research Centre. He has been involved with PhD research supervision for many years. During his time as an academic at Bournemouth University he has run a number of units in the areas of Applied Technology, Technological Principles, Science & Technology, Materials & Processing, design methods, projects, manufacturing and Design Management Commercialisation as well as Business Development.

Mark is a Professor (Grade 2) within the Department of Design and Engineering with research theme responsibility of ‘Tribology and Design’. He has been a member of staff at Bournemouth University since 1997 and a Professor since 2001. Before this he was a Lecturer ‘B’ at Brunel University from 1993 within the Mechanical Engineering Department. He has industrial experience as a Senior Project Engineer with AE Wellworthy Ltd (FEA). Mark has also worked at the Royal Aircraft Establishment in Farnborough working on FEA optimisation programs and at Marchant Filer and Dixon Consultant Design Engineers in Romsey.
