Paying your tuition fees

If you are a UK student, you may be eligible for a postgraduate loan to cover your course fees (EU student may also be eligible for January 2021 entry). If you don’t want to pay your fees using the student loan, or aren't eligible, you can choose to pay them in one lump sum or in three instalments each year. When you register online, you will agree the arrangements to pay your tuition fees. Online registration takes place before enrolment.

Deposits for International postgraduate students

For January 2021 entry, international (non-EU) students need to pay a non-refundable* £2,000 (deposit to secure their place on a postgraduate course.

For September 2021 and January 2022 entry, international (non-UK) students will need to pay a non-refundable* £3,000 (deposit to secure their place on a postgraduate course

You will need to pay your deposit by the date stated in your offer letter. The remainder of your fee will be payable on registration/enrolment. Your deposit can be paid in the methods explained in the 'How to pay' section below.  

*There are two exceptions to the non-refundable rule on the deposit:

  • You fail to meet the academic or English requirements of your offer
  • You are refused a visa to enter the UK, provided the reason for the refusal is not a fraudulent application. 

In addition, you will be eligible for a deposit refund if you are unable to physically commence study at BU due to travel restrictions imposed either by the UK Government or the government in the country from which you are travelling to BU. If requested by us, you will be required to provide evidence of the relevant government’s travel restrictions to show you were unable to travel to BU in time to start your course.

If you’re concerned about this fee, please speak to our International Admissions team who may be able to extend the deadline for you to pay any required deposit and secure your place. We may not be able to offer an extension if a course has very limited remaining places.

How to pay

You have options when considering how to pay your deposit and tuition fees.

For deposits and tuition fees paid in full in one lump sum, you can pay by cash, cheque, banker’s drafts, bank transfers (see details below), Flywire (for non-UK students - see details below) and debit/credit card.

If using a credit/debit card, you can pay your tuition fees (not deposit) in instalments online. This option is available to all postgraduate students, whether you are studying on a full or part-time basis. 
For January 2021 entry, you can pay in three instalments and each payment will be one-third of the course fee. The first instalment will be taken when you register and pay online, with the second instalment deducted three months later, and the final instalment taken six months after your first payment. For September 2021 and January 2022 entry, you may elect to pay your tuition fees in two intalments by setting up a recurring debit/credit card payment authority. 50% of the fee (after any deposits or discounts have been applied) must be paid on or before enrolment. The final instalment (50%) will be claimed from the relevant card account approximately three calendar months from the due date of the first instalment. You will be informed of the exact due date on which the second instalment will be payable when you set up your recurring card payment authority. 

Students from the USA who receive a Federal Loan can make arrangements to pay their fees in three instalments that tie in with their loan payments.

Sponsorship by a company/organisation

Sponsors can pay your tuition fees on your behalf by selecting any of the payment methods listed in the Online Registration system.

Sponsorship authorisation

Sponsors (Company/Organisations) can pay your tuition fees on your behalf by selecting any of the payment methods listed in the Online Registration system. If your Sponsor requires an official BU invoice, please download the Sponsorship Authorisation Form (pdf 57kb). Your registration will be complete upon receipt of the completed sponsorship form.
