It is quick and easy to sign up for a SportBU membership. You can either pop by our reception and sign up with one of our friendly reception team or alternatively you can sign up online and activate your membership card on your first visit.
How long does a membership last?
Memberships are either one month or for the full academic year for students, or quarterly and annual for members of the general public. All of our services are also available on a casual pay-as-you-go basis at a cost of £5 per entry for students and £6 for the community, with a £10 for 10-day option for all new members as a trial.
Is SportBU available to the public?
All of our services and facilities are open to the public apart from our performance sports teams which are only available for BU students. It is one of our leading aims to engage with and become a key part of the local community.
What is the minimum age to register with SportBU?
You will need to be a minimum of 16 years of ages to make use of our facilities. For those younger members of the community please check out our SportBU Kids Page where you can try loads of fun sports, games and activities during the school holidays; weekends and even tailored Birthday parties.
When I join will I be issued with a membership card?
At SportBU we have a full swipe-card entry system to the gym and the facility as a whole. Students will have their membership assigned to their student card and everyone else will receive a membership card free of charge.
How do I pay for a membership?
Memberships can be paid for upfront with cash or card. Staff members can take advantage of our great Staff Salary Contribution scheme where payments are taken monthly from your monthly salary. We currently do not have the capacity for direct debit memberships.
Can I trial SportBU before Joining?
Everyone can try out our great facilities and services on a pay as you go basis before committing to a full membership at a cost of £5 per entry for usage of the gym for students and a £6 entry for community. We also have a £10 for 10 days membership. All memberships offer unlimited gym use and unlimited class bookings for the full duration of the membership type.
Do SportBU memberships have a cooling down period?
Yes, if you are unhappy with your membership for any reason within 7 days of becoming a member, you are entitled to a full refund upon producing written evidence to SportBU of your membership, date of joining and payment (receipt). This period is extended to 14 days for memberships which were purchased online.
I am a AUB Student, can I join?
Yes, and you also get all the great Prices that Bournemouth University students get! The only service you cannot enroll in is the Performance Sport programme as all students represent Bournemouth University.
Where can I park my car?
Bournemouth University has two large car-parks on campus. Between the hours of 8:30am and 4:30pm members will be required to use the £2 pay and display car park at the front of the campus, just behind the bus stops. Outside of these hours parking is free and available both in the front car-park and also the large one to the rear of the campus. More information about where to park.
What are SportBU Opening Hours?
We are open 7.15am-10:30pm Monday to Friday and 8am-8pm on weekends during term time. During out of term time periods we are open 9am-8.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am-6pm on weekends. We will be closed over the Christmas period and also on all bank holidays.
What should I wear to the gym?
We request that appropriate gym attire is worn when participating in any fitness classes or attending the gym; this means no jeans and no flip-flops/plimsolls. Any specialist equipment which may be required for classes will be provided for you.
Are towels provided?
Towels are highly recommended but not provided. They are available to buy from our merchandise range at reception for £6. The gym and studios are equipped with paper towels and spray for those occasions where you forget your own gym towel.
Does SportBU have changing facilities?
We have fully equipped changing facilities for all members on site including showers, toilets, hairdryers and lockers. These are also available for use by anyone who makes a booking on our 3G Astro-turf Talbot Arena.
Do I require my membership card for each visit?
Members will be required to swipe into the facility and gym each time they come. If you forget your card 3 times we will no longer grant you entry without it.
Are they lockers available?
We have 159 lockers of various sizes available for all our members to use. These are operated on a code system so no keys or change are required. Lockers must be used as no bags are allowed in the gym.
*Additionally, there are alternate lockers within each changing room available to hire for £35 per year along with a £15 deposit.
Can I book online?
Yes we have a full online class booking system available on our website.

Will I be shown how to use the gym equipment?
Every membership entitles you to your complimentary gym induction. This includes a brief introduction to the gym equipment, a consultation with a qualified Personal Trainer and advice on how best to achieve your fitness goals. Your initial induction can run from anywhere between 20 & 30 minutes depending on your gym experience and any questions you may have. For anyone who is confident training in a gym, you can sign the waiver to use the gym straight away.
Can I have my fitness tested?
We can offer you a full health check to compliment your time in the gym and to help you track your progress. This will cover anatomical measurements, blood pressure, resting heart rate and a full Body-Stat test. The Body-Stat measures your body fat percentage, lean mass percentage, hydration, daily calorie requirement and more. All of our fantastic Precor CV equipment has built in fitness tests as well, so if you want to utilise these just ask on of our fitness team for any advice you need.
What machines are in the gym?
The gym houses the following equipment for all your fitness needs:
30 station state of the art, networked CV area with fully integrated touch screen entertainment including Freeview, iPod connectivity, internet and exercise guides
Comprehensive range of fixed resistance machines covering all the large movements and muscle groups
Exceptional free-weights area including 2 fully accessorised half racks and 1 power rack, 3 Olympic platforms, 2 Olympic bench press stations, 6 multi adjustable benches, dumbbells 1-50kg, 1600kg of Olympic plates and bars including bumper plates, glute-ham raise, dual adjustable pulleys and more.
How often should I exercise?
National guidelines state you should do 30 minutes exercise 5 days per week, however to see some real results we suggest a little more; 4/5 focused and planned hour sessions a week will get you well on the way to see the results you want to see, whatever they are.
How do I book classes?
You can book classes online, over the phone (01202 965012), at our Fast Track Kiosk or in person at our reception desk, whichever is easiest for you.
Can I book classes in advance?
Yes, and we encourage you to do so to ensure you have a space and avoid disappointment as our classes are extremely popular. You can book up to a week in advance, with non-members paying the class fee when they book.
Do I have to pay extra for group fitness classes?
All members get group fitness classes for free. Non-members can pay per class, with class prices starting at £3.
How many classes per week does SportBU run?
During term time we run over 50 classes a week with the first classes starting at 7.30am and the last ending at 8:25pm. Out of term time our class programme reduces down to around 15 classes per week to match demand.
Do I need a certain level of fitness to take part?
Our classes and gym are designed to be suitable for anyone, regardless of your current fitness level or gym experience. We are here to help and to get better together.
What qualifications do SportBU instructors hold?
All of our gym staff are REPs Certified Level 3 personal trainers. Each trainer has differing qualifications on top of this giving each one different expertise. This may be worth considering when making an enquiry so be specific with what you want to achieve or any special considerations you may have.
Does SportBU have Pool?
Due to the high number of satellite leisure swimming pools around Talbot campus we have formed leading partnerships to subsidise the cost of swimming to BU & AUB students and staff, rather than having a costly space-consuming pool onsite. Memberships with 'Everyone Active' can be purchased at a discounted rate to use at their Dophin Swimming Pool and Rossmore Leisure Centre sites.
Can I bring a friend on occasion?
We encourage you to bring friends along to try all the great things we have on offer here at SportBU and suggest that the best way for them to experience our facilities is through our competitive Pay As You Go Prices. Every new member gets 1 Free Day when initially joining, so every person has the ability to try before they buy. Additonally, all Premium members can bring a friend for free on the 1st of every month.
Can I pay for my memberships in full?
Yes you can and in fact this will work out as the cheapest way for you to get a membership here at sportBU. Prices are £180 for students, staff and alumni and £240 for public members annually. Student & Staff prices are reduced on a pro-rata basis throughout the year at the end of predetermined time periods.
How do I renew my membership?
You can renew your membership Online, or pop by to see one of our reception team who will be happy to assist you in signing up for more!
I no longer wish to continue with my membership, what should i do?
Our memberships are fixed term and will run through to the designated expiry date unless you experience any mitigating circumstances such as poor health or moving away from the area. Please consult your terms and conditions as you sign up and keep these safe to refer to during your membership period.
Is the SportBU website secure?
All payment gateways on the Bournemouth University website are secure. If in doubt, look for the padlock symbol on your browser screen or the prefix https in the address bar.
How can I give feedback?
We welcome all feedback as it helps us to consistently improve our service week on week, year on year. Please leave us feedback (1-5 Star Rating) on the Google Search platform and leave a comment about your visit.
I have lost my membership card, how do I get a new one?
You can get a new membership card from us at reception for a fee of £5 (or free if it has been stolen and you have a police crime number). Alternatively, SportBU offers handy key fobs in the place of your membership card. They are £8 and are also available at SportBU reception. Students who lose their student card which has their membership assigned to it will need to visit askBU in Poole House to arrange a new one.
SportBU group fitness classes
I have received an email regarding not attending classes, what does this mean?
We operate a 3 strikes system at SportBU regarding class attendance to ensure everyone gets a chance to attend their favorite classes and get active. Each time you miss a class we will send you an email to notify you and explain the next step. When you reach 3 no-shows you will have your pre-booking privileges revoked for the remaining of the term and you will accumulate a debt on your account for the 3rd class you missed, payable on your next visit before you can use any of our facilities again.
What should I do when I want to cancel a class?
We request that you cancel your classes with at least 24 hours' notice so that we can offer your space to another member. We can only accept limited numbers into each class and their popularity means we have waiting lists of people who would love to if you can't. We do however understand that in the case of an emergency or due to your work, it might be difficult for you to inform us within 24 hours. If this is the case, please give us notice as soon as possible and depending on your circumstances, we may be able to cancel your session. Please remember that if you let us know we can get someone else in and continue to provide the best service possible.
I attended a class but still received a non-attendance email, why?
The most likely reason for this is that you booked but didn't check in at reception on the day of the class. Each time you attend a class please see one of our reception team or check in via our fast track kiosk and make sure you hand your receipt to the instructor of your class.
Why has my class been cancelled?
Occasionally we remove classes temporarily from the programme due to insufficient bookings as we want all of our classes that run to be as vibrant and motivating as possible. As such we set a minimum booking number of 3 people for a 30 minute or 45 minute class or 4 people for a 60 minute class. We also try to keep up with trends and what is popular with members and alter our programme accordingly to make sure you can have what you want.
Can I still attend a class if I am excluded from advanced bookings?
Although we cannot guarantee a space there and then, you can definitely still turn up for classes on the day and see if there is space for you to attend.
