MSc Medical Imaging with Management

Core units:

Cross-sectional Imaging 1 (MRI): Medical imaging and therapeutic departments are advancing at a very fast pace in terms of technology and clinical need. Within this context, an appreciation of the technical and clinical principles required for efficient service delivery is important. You’ll learn the physical principles, specific imaging techniques, basic imaging anatomy and recognition of common clinical abnormalities when using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques. The unit will also help you to critically explore clinical, research and technological advancements as well as critique future developments in the field of MRI practice.

Cross-sectional Imaging 2 (CT): You’ll learn the physical principles, specific imaging techniques, basic imaging anatomy and recognition of common clinical abnormalities when using computed tomography (CT) techniques. The unit will also help you to critically explore clinical, research and technological advancements as well as critique future developments in the field of CT practice.

Research Methods for Health & Social Care: The aim of this unit is to enable you to critically appraise the merits of various research methods in addressing health and social care questions. You’ll become familiar with common methodological approaches to research and will gain an understanding of the principles that underpin commonly used methods of data analysis and interpretation.

Managing People: The unit aims to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of the theories and practices of organisational behaviour, especially in the area of people management, and how this can effectively contribute to positive organisational outcomes.

Leadership Essentials: Organisational life is increasingly complex in modern work settings. Within this context, effective leadership is necessary to achieving set objectives. The unit aims to provide a critical understanding of leadership theory and how it relates to practice in a variety of organisational settings. You will develop greater self-awareness through reflexivity and working with teams, combined with a theoretical understanding including emotional intelligence, resilience and well-being.

Dissertation: The dissertation project is a student-managed piece of work that is undertaken with guidance from academic supervisors. The unit encourages you to draw on prior learning and aims to develop your ability for independent study and project management, expanding your knowledge and/or practice in a complex professional context.

Option units (choose one):

Foundations of Health Information Systems: This unit aims to help you learn the fundamentals of health information systems by introducing the key concepts, principles, processes and related issues, and carrying out relevant activities in the analysis and design of health information systems. Besides, the unit will cover health data generation, compilation, analysis, synthesis, communication and analytics. You will develop an understanding of the legal and ethical issues surrounding the implementation of health information systems and the use of electronic health data.

Systematic Reviewing to Inform Practice: Having an understanding of the existing research literature allows you to place your research study in context. This unit will help you develop skills in searching for relevant research publications as well as extracting and synthesising data before interpreting and reporting findings in a systematic manner.

Cross-Sectional Imaging III (Medical Ultrasound): This unit aims to provide you with the fundamentals of physical principles, imaging techniques, basic imaging anatomy, common clinical abnormalities, and governance principles of medical ultrasound. This unit will also support you to critically explore the research, professional and technological advancements in the field of medical ultrasound.

Please note: students are required to complete all core units, plus one optional unit.

The MSc Medical Imaging with Management programme involves some hours of supervised practice/simulation to observe advanced imaging procedures at the Institute of Medical Imaging & Visualisation – Lansdowne Campus.

A Bachelors Honours degree with at least 2:2 in a required subject, or equivalent. Appropriate professional qualifications with significant work experience would be considered e.g. Diploma of the college of radiographers.

Required subject: Radiography (diagnostic or therapy), sonography, medical physics/engineering/medicine, biomedical/biological/physical sciences. Other healthcare professionals will also be considered.

• India: Bachelor’s degree (4 years) from a recognised HE institution with a minimum overall result of 55%
• Nigeria:  Bachelor's degree from a recognised institution with a minimum classification of 2:2
• Thailand:  Thai Bachelor's (Honours) degree from a recognised higher education institution with a minimum GPA of 2.5/4.0
• Turkey: Bachelor’s degree (Lisans Diplomasi - four years) with a minimum overall GPA of 2.3/4.0
• Vietnam:  Bachelor's degree/Bang tot nghiep dai hoc with an average score of 6.5/10, or a Master’s degree/Thac si.

All applications will be subject to a minimum grade and your degree may need to be in a relevant subject area.

English language requirements 

If English is not your first language, you will need to provide evidence that you understand English to a satisfactory level. English language requirements for this course are normally:

IELTS (Academic) 6.5 with minimum 6.0 in each component, or equivalent.

Bournemouth University International College offers a number of pre-sessional English and preparatory programmes to prepare international students for postgraduate study at BU. Admission to the degree is guaranteed on successful completion of your course to the required level. 

This course is designed to suit the progression and career development of allied health professionals (e.g., Diagnostic Radiographers, Radiotherapists, sonographers), medical physicists, engineers, scientists (e.g., biomedical/medical/biological/physical), psychologists and medical students wishing to intercalate and prepare for a career in radiology. Other healthcare professionals  and those with significant clinical and/or industrial experience in the field of medical imaging will also be considered. Appropriate professional qualifications e.g., Diploma of the College of Radiographers will be considered.

We’ll be selecting the candidates for this course by looking at their applications – normally there are no interviews, however students with non-standard entry criteria may be asked for a telephone or face to face interview. Additional costs

• Textbooks, general stationery and other supplies. Our award-winning library is stocked with a large range of text books and online resources, free of charge. The Students’ Union shops stock a wide range of stationery supplies on both campuses.

• Travel costs, for optional field trips, outdoor wear and footwear for mandatory and optional field trips (if applicable).
• Travel costs to and from the University campus. An annual bus pass is included in your rent if you are living in halls of residence/Unilet accommodation or may be purchases separately.
• Travel costs to and from your placement (both in the UK and overseas) if this is part of your course of study. Placement year funding can be found on our website.

While all aspects of the programme, including required field trips, are included in the fee, additional, optional or extra curricula activities may be available for which a student contribution is required.

If you need to repeat one or more units during the course of your studies (with or without attendance) the pricing will be pro-rata of the full time fee.

International (not Rep. of Ireland) students need to pay a non-refundable deposit to secure their place on a postgraduate course. For September 2024 and January 2025 entry, a £5,000 deposit is required. You will need to pay your deposit by the date stated in your offer letter. The remainder of your fee will be payable on registration/enrolment. There are two exceptions to the non-refundable rule on the deposit:

• You fail to meet the academic or English requirements of your offer
• You are refused a visa to enter the UK, provided the reason for the refusal is not a fraudulent application.

Theo is a senior lecturer in medical imaging and MRI radiography at the Institute of Medical Imaging and Visualisation, Bournemouth University. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Ghana (BSc Diagnostic Radiography) and postgraduate degrees from King's College London (MSc Neuroimaging) and the National University of Ireland, Galway (PhD Medicine). He investigated the progression of neuroanatomical abnormalities in psychosis using magnetic resonance imaging for his postgraduate training. Prior to his postgraduate studies, Theo worked clinically as a diagnostic radiographer in some of Ghana's busiest urban and rural hospitals.

Yumei Yang is a lecturer in Human Resource Management and Organizational Behaviour at the Bournemouth University Business School. Her current research interests are organizational routines and organizational learning. Particularly, she is interested in evaluating how organizational defensive routines affect organizational life, such as organizational performance, organizational learning and job satisfaction. During her PhD, she developed a scale to measure organizational defensive routines. Her current study is to explore whether these kind of routines are more prevalent in Chinese culture than they are in the UK.
