Postgraduate research fees

Fees for postgraduate research degrees vary depending on the subject you are studying and whether you are a UK, EU or international student.

This page provides an overview of the cost of qualifications, including Master’s by Research (MRes), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

These fees are inclusive and cover all the essential course elements. You may be required to pay for optional or discretionary aspects of your studies, such as textbooks, optional placements and printing charges.

Research degree fees for UK, CI and Republic of Ireland students

For September 2026 and April 2027 entry: full-time fees are £5,250 per year. Part-time fees: you will be charged a proportion of the full-time fee according to how much you study during the year.

UK/CI/ROI students are not required to pay a deposit before starting their research degree.

Research degree fees for International students

For September 2026 and April 2027 entry: full-time fees are £21,000 per year for library-based study and £26,250 per year for lab-based study. Part-time fees: you will be charged a proportion of the full-time fee according to how much you study during the year.

International students need to pay a non-refundable* deposit to secure their place on a postgraduate research degree. The deposit amount is £5,000. You will need to pay your deposit by the date stated in your offer letter. The remainder of your fee will be payable on registration/enrolment.

*There are two exceptions to the non-refundable rule on the deposit:

• You fail to meet the academic or English requirements of your offer
• You are refused a visa to enter the UK, provided the reason for the refusal is not a fraudulent application.

There are various ways you can pay your fees and you may also be eligible for a discount on your fees depending on your circumstances.
