Social sciences placement information

You will have the support of a Placement Coordinator. They’ll help you plan your placement so you get the right experience for you. That includes offering help and support if you need to move to another part of the UK – and even another country – to get the most out of your time.

We’ve also built close industry links over the years – so our network of employers that are keen to work with placement students is always growing. We have had students undertake placements in industry including social care, criminal justice, policing, social research, marketing and the Civil Service. Placements have included Victim Support, the Probation Service, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, Inclusion (Drug and Alcohol Services), His majesty's Inspectorate of Fire and Rescue Services, IBM, Mercedes Benz and Westminster Council.

You could choose to undertake your placement abroad in locations such as Kosovo or Canada where the Department has established links with partners. Within this scheme, placements can be carried out in conjunction with a term of study abroad. Students receive support and guidance in securing placements through an excellence hands-on support team, but as key transferable skills here involve communication, job-search skills, increased autonomy and self-confidence, students are encouraged to proactively search for their own placements.
