Martyn Polkinghorne has a PhD in Knowledge Management and Decision Making using Artificial Intelligence and is recognised as being the developer of the first commercially available intelligent ship autopilot system. At Bournemouth University, he is a Principal Academic in Business and Management, operating from within the Business School and based in the Department of Marketing, Strategy and Innovation (MSI). Martyn was the Head of Education for the Department of People and Organisations (P&O) and previously the Head of Education for the Department of Leadership, Strategy and Organisations (LSO) in the Faculty of Management with responsibility for many of the business and management courses in the Business School.

Martyn was also previously a Visiting Fellow in the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences assisting them with external relationships and funding applications.

Martyn holds a university-wide role supporting the development of both academic and professional service staff through the TeachBU initiative which offers Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy and he is an Education Excellence Theme Leader within the Centre for Fusion Learning Innovation and Excellence

Martyn was previously Knowledge Transfer Programmes Centre Manager for Bournemouth University and the Head of Innovation and Start-up programmes at the University of Plymouth.

Following an earlier career delivering business support and knowledge transfer solutions to the public and private sectors, Martyn's current research is focussed upon the 'Evaluation of Student Learning Gain' and the role that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can play in supporting teaching and learning.

He is also undertaking research that considers 'Andragogy' and issues relating to the university education of 'Mature Learners'.

Current research interests include project management, decision making, the 'academic and non-academic impact' generated by postgraduate researchers, small business issues and the role of 'recursive abstraction' as a qualitative analysis technique.
