From Monday 14 January the Costa Coffee outlets in the Fusion Building and Student Centre will pilot a three month scheme to encourage staff and students to recycle their cups.
Takeaway cups from any of the outlets across campus can be placed in the cup recycling bins which are available by the Costa outlets in these buildings. Everyone is strongly encouraged to use these new bins – but please ensure that the cups are free from any leftover liquid beforehand!
Last year, Costa Coffee committed to becoming the first ever coffee chain in the UK to recycle the same volume of cups that they put onto the market. By 2020 they hope to recycle up to 500 million takeaway coffee cups a year. Plus, be it Costa or otherwise, they will recycle any paper coffee cup.
Costa have developed this scheme in order to prevent millions of cups ending up in landfill or the incinerator. As a result, they are working with a number of areas with high volumes of cups such as universities, airports and shopping centres and BU has been chosen to pilot the scheme in the south of the country.
The recycled cups will be made into paper, shopping bags and beauty product packaging among other things.
BU is committed to upholding the UN Sustainable Goals and taking part in this scheme adheres to goal 12 – responsible consumption and production.
