Did you know the food we eat is linked to one third of all carbon emissions in the world? Our BU Sustainability & Ethical Food Policy commits us to reducing the negative impacts of the foods we consume on campus, which is why we are encouraging the BU community to take part in Veganuary!
Veganuary aims to make it as simple as possible for people to try being vegan. A plant-based diet has proven health benefits, including increased energy levels (good for productivity!), lower cholesterol levels, and lower blood pressure. Shifting towards a plant-based diet is also the easiest way to reduce your individual carbon footprint.
Signing up to take part in Veganuary will give you access to helpful resources such as cookbooks, recipes and tips. Sign up on the Veganuary.com website. To maximise your impact, we recommend you introduce this challenge to friends or flatmates to complete together.
How is BU supporting you through Veganuary?
Chartwells have introduced a new Carbon Labelling system to enable everyone at BU to make more informed choices about the food they consume. The system uses real food Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data and A-E ratings with a traffic light colour to indicate the carbon intensity of food options, which aligns to the global carbon budget set by the EAT-Lancet Commission. Chartwells have also recently changed the price of their plant milks to match the price of dairy milk. Please use these schemes to support your Veganuary goals while on campus!
