Bournemouth University’s men’s basketball team have won the British Universities and Colleges Sport national trophy.
Their success came at the BUCS Big Wednesday in Loughborough where national titles were decided across sixteen sports.
The BU team lifted the trophy after beating the University of Strathclyde 90 – 62 in the final.
To reach the final, BU won four matches in the knock-out rounds of the competition, beating Southampton Solent University, Plymouth Marjon University, Loughborough University 2nd team and then defeating the University of Portsmouth in the semi-finals.
BU got off to a fast start in the final, building a 13-0 lead, but Strathclyde came back to keep the scores close at half time. In the second half, BU pulled away and kept up their momentum to ensure they took home the first national trophy for a men’s team from the university in any sport.
Their success adds to the national trophy won by BU's women’s basketball team seven years ago.
BU’s coach said, Luca Dronyk, said, “Before this game we had very little insight on Strathclyde as we have never played them before so we didn’t know what was going to happen but we were up to the task.
“I have the privilege of having eight fantastic athletes who are individually talented and together they seem unstoppable.”
The team’s next match is the BUCS league playoff final against the University of Westminster on 2 April in the Sports Hall on Talbot Campus where a win will secure promotion to the Premier division.
