Bournemouth University has teamed up with the UK government’s Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) to join their industrial placement scheme for students.
Students from BU’s Department of Life and Environmental Sciences will be able to apply for paid, year-long placements at the CEFAS laboratories, working with experts on a wide range of topics such as food safety, antimicrobial resistance, aquaculture development, the ecology of harmful algae and algal biotoxins. CEFAS has its biggest laboratory in the nearby coastal town of Weymouth and employs over a 100 scientific and technical staff.
Dr. Dan Franklin (Associate Professor of Environmental Science at BU) commented “It’s really pleasing that we now access to these excellent opportunities for our students. I and other colleagues in LES have long standing collaborations with CEFAS colleagues, and we are all looking forward to completing cutting-edge research together with our students. Thanks to our teams in BU and CEFAS who have helped make this happen”.
Dan recently visited the CEFAS labs in Weymouth and met with Dr. Rachel Hartnell MBE (Science Director) to discuss the next steps in the implementation of the scheme, which they hope will be up and running, with projects in place, in 2026.
