On Thursday 25 September, we are proudly celebrating SDG Flag Day, demonstrating our continued commitment to embedding the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across BU.
Adopted by 193 UN member states a decade ago, the SDGs provide a global blueprint for building a sustainable, just and inclusive world. SDG Flag Day, led by the Global Compact Network, is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness of the 17 goals and inspiring collective action.
Raising awareness on campus
For many of our students joining BU this September, it will be their first taste of campus life. We see this as a key opportunity to introduce them to BU’s values and showcase how sustainability lies at the heart of our community. Through events like the SDG Flag Day, we aim to inspire students to join us in shaping a more sustainable future and highlight the role they can play throughout their time here.
Our ongoing commitment to sustainability
As a university, BU sits in a unique position to drive progress towards the SDGs. We contribute by addressing global challenges through our research, educating the future workforce, embedding sustainability across our estate operations, and collaborating with local and global communities to drive positive change.
Our efforts have not gone unnoticed. This year, BU ranked joint 59th out of 2,318 universities worldwide and 8th in the UK in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, a global assessment of how universities are contributing to the SDGs. This recognition reflects the hard work and dedication across our university community.
Looking ahead
While we are proud of our achievements, we recognise that more must be done. SDG Flag Day serves as a reminder of the urgency of the global challenges we face - and the need to continue raising our ambition. At BU, we remain committed to accelerating our efforts and deepening our impact as we work collectively toward a better and more sustainable future for all.
