BU student Erin Georgia Villanueva has been selected as this year’s recipient of the ESET Studentship, an award designed to support emerging talent in the cybersecurity sector.
The studentship is sponsored by ESET, a leading global cybersecurity company headquartered in Slovakia, with a UK office in Bournemouth town centre.
Michelle Poole Winter, Alumni Relations Officer, who oversees the studentship application process, said: “Congratulations to Erin, a deserving candidate… we are grateful to ESET and delighted to call them our partners.”
Erin, who has received a £5,000 grant and a new laptop to support her first year on the BA (Hons) Cyber Security Management, said:
“I’m very grateful to BU and ESET for this opportunity. When I received the email to say I had been chosen, I literally jumped up and punched the air with excitement!”
Aimee Pardey, ESET PR and Communications Specialist said, "I know Erin will benefit so much, she joins a growing number of female students who have received the funding from ESET in the US, Canada and Australia whilst they pursue their qualifications."
The initiative forms part of ESET’s work to promote diversity and raise awareness of careers in the cyber sector, which is currently around 80% male.
Supporting development and opportunities
The studentship provides financial support, mentorship, professional connections, and a new laptop - resources Erin says will have a real impact on her studies and future career.
“The funding will help me plan for certifications, additional external courses, and travel costs. I’m hoping to do a placement, so this will help me travel further if needed,” she explained.
“It’s not just the funding - it’s the other benefits too: an amazing new laptop, merchandise, and the chance to network with businesses ESET works with. It’s a real opportunity to see how things work within employment.”
Michelle added that the studentship provides vital support beyond finances:
“The funding provides much needed financial support and of course the practical support helps the student to grow personally and professionally.”

Erin already has a clear vision for her career in cybersecurity.
“I’d like to work in cyber prevention - maybe with the police, civil service, or any industry where I can make a difference. I want a job where I’m constantly learning and, of course, financially comfortable.”
BU’s support along the journey
Despite being early into her degree, Erin says Bournemouth University has played a significant role in encouraging her ambitions.
“I’m just starting my first year, but I already feel very supported by BU. They informed me of the studentship, encouraged me to apply, and kept me updated throughout the process.”
A partnership making a lifelong impact
Erin also praised the partnership between BU and ESET, highlighting the doors it has opened.
“I wouldn’t have known about ESET, their work, or the studentship. This will impact the rest of my life - it’s giving me the chance to network with organisations I never would have thought of, potential placement opportunities, and eventually employment.”
Michelle also highlighted BU’s appreciation of ESET’s ongoing commitment: “We look forward to awarding further grants in the future."
