BU has nearly completed the first phase of our Estates Development Framework to improve facilities and both the Bournemouth Gateway and Poole Gateway Buildings are on track to open during 2020.
Now BU is ready to embark on phase two of our estates plans for the next five years, up to 2025, with a further investment of £100m.
The first development of phase two, Poole Gateway Building Phase 2, will see a significant investment of circa £38m in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) areas, providing a purpose-built academic building for the country’s future scientists and innovators.
This new building will deliver high quality facilities that support undergraduate and postgraduate courses. There will also be flexible facilities, enabling collaboration between subject areas, helping to bring colleagues and students together and drive research forward. The building’s specialist spaces will include computing and psychology laboratories, a new lecture theatre, staff offices, seminar rooms and research facilities for use by all staff and students.
The Poole Gateway Building phase 2 will be situated next to the Poole Gateway Building phase 1 and will be five storeys high and approximately 7,500sqm. It will be constructed to a high quality environmental standard, including photovoltaic solar panels, rainwater harvesting and highly efficient heating and cooling systems.
A public engagement period will begin on 13 May, including an exhibition of our proposals on 12 June before we submit the planning application later in the summer.
A newsletter is being delivered to local residents next week inviting them to come along and view our plans. Staff and students are also welcome to attend and find out more about this new building. The event is open for staff and students on 12 June between 2pm and 4pm in Talbot House, Talbot Campus.
