Mass graves are sites of horrific violence and need effective protection and investigation. This podcast asks: What standards for investigation are now needed? How should mass graves be handled to protect the interests of families and survivors? What new techniques are available to uncover the truth? What do states need to do to fulfil their responsibilities?

The UN’s special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, Dr Agnes Callamard and the director-general of the International Commission on Missing Persons, Kathryne Bomberger join hosts Janet H. Anderson and Stephanie van den Berg from the Asymmetrical Haircuts international justice podcast to explore these questions.

They draw on the Bournemouth Protocol on Mass Grave Protection and Investigation and the UN Special Rapporteur’s November 2020 report on mass graves.
