Bike week is an annual event recognised internationally as an opportunity to celebrate and encourage cycling. To support this year’s National Bike Week - which runs between Sunday 30 May – Saturday 5 June, we’ll be promoting all of the fantastic things BU is doing to encourage more of our students and staff to get on their bikes as well as highlight the range of activities you can get involved with.
Over the past year, bike sales have soared and as a nation, we have fallen back in love with cycling; as a way to exercise, get out into nature, spend time with friends & family safely and to explore the stunning areas we live in - often not seen from the roadside. Take a look at our local cycle routes page for more information on events, local group rides and a few recommended routes which we think are worth the detour!
BU are committed to supporting active travel, and with students and staff slowly returning to campuses, why not continue that cycling behaviour and ride to BU as part of your commute? As well as helping the environment and tackling the global climate crisis, cycling has significant health and wellbeing benefits, as well as being one of most cost-effective ways to get around. Read more about how cycling helps you and the planet.

Did you know BU has received the GOLD Standard Award by the Cycle Friendly Employer Accreditation Scheme?
BU are extremely proud to have been internationally recognised as the first organisation in the Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch area to achieve the GOLD standard award as part of Cycling UK’s Cycle Friendly Employer accreditation scheme. Following our audit in April 2021, Cycling UK said: ‘Bournemouth University demonstrated a very active commitment to improving conditions for cycling across all sites within the University. As a significant employer and as one of Bournemouth’s largest journey generators, Bournemouth University recognises its contribution to protecting and enhancing its surroundings and wider city environment, as cycling can reduce congestion and improve air quality’
