At BU, we're always working hard to eliminate single-use waste where we can across our campuses.
Monday 17 to Friday 21 November is Green Week on campus. During this week, we're asking our students, staff and the community to avoid using paper coffee cups by bringing their own cup, using the coffee shop's crockery or joining out Cup Exchange Scheme. We've decided to target paper cups because although they look like they are made of paper, they're coated in plastic which makes them difficult to recycle.
As an extra incentive, from 17 to 21 November, customers will receive two stamps on their loyalty card for choosing a sustainable cup. If you choose to purchase a paper cup, you will be charged an extra 30p for the hot drink. This charge is implemented year-round.
What's the BU’s Cup Exchange Scheme?
The Cup Exchange Scheme aims to eliminate the issue of forgetting your reusable cup and having to carry around a dirty cup. How does it work?
- You can join by buying a returnable cup for a one-off cost of £3.95 from Chartwells or SUBU outlets across Talbot and Lansdowne campuses (excluding Dylans)
- When finished, you return the cup to a café in exchange for a token.
- When the customer next buys a hot drink, they can exchange their token for a new returnable cup.
