A group of five students from the MSc Organisational Project Management course is taking part in the APM Project Management Challenge - an annual competition where teams have the opportunity to conceptualise, plan and deliver a project from start to finish.
Together they created project “Mosquito Call”, a project that connects local partners and encourages small, sustainable actions in our community. These individual acts create a ripple effect, connecting everyday local behaviour with global environmental healing.
The project is delivered in partnership with Sustainable BU, SUBU, MoreBus, Bournemouth Uni Food and the Nimsdai Foundation. Each partner supports the campaign by showing how small actions can create positive change.
The team also launched an engaging Instagram campaign at @beyougrow, sharing simple and practical sustainable actions that everyone can take in everyday life.
The team has been working hard on the project since last November and it needs to be delivered in April – the results will be announced at an awards ceremony in May.
Throughout this project, the students discovered that one of the most exciting parts is the collaboration with a local primary school, which joined the pilot activity. Pupils loved the colourful activity books designed by the team, which are helping children learn about making sustainable choices in a fun and creative way. The project is also contributing to global sustainability by supporting reforestation in the Amazon. The campaign planted eight trees, through the ‘Saving the Amazon Forest’ , yielding direct environmental benefits.
Students are being supported throughout the challenge by Dr Arkadiusz Tomczyk, Programme Leader, with additional mentorship from Alex Rabey-Bennett, an APM professional project manager. Dr Tomczyk reflected on the project: "Mosquito Call shows that even small initiatives can lead to big environmental change when guided by strong project leadership and purpose."
This project shows how project management skills can bring people together and support real change in our community.
