Bournemouth University graduate Josie Gallo is about to see her name alongside some of the biggest TV productions in the world — thanks to her work as Associate Producer on the Emmy-nominated series Prefects.
The 13-part boarding school comedy-drama, produced by Peripheral Vision International, isn’t just fun and friendship - it covers many challenges facing young people today, such as corruption, bullying, censorship, and young people’s rights. It’s also doing it all with a modest budget, proving that you don’t need Hollywood-scale resources to make a global impact.
Shot in Nairobi with a Kenyan production crew and an international cast and creative team, Prefects has already been broadcast in more than 20 countries on over 40 networks and is available worldwide on streaming platforms - recognition that helped earn the series a nomination in the Kids: Live Action category.
Josie, now based in London, says she was “over the moon” when the Emmy nomination was announced. “It feels quite surreal to see our work alongside productions from the likes of Netflix and Disney! For a small team working with modest budgets, it’s testament to the power of social-impact entertainment and the incredible talent of the production crew in Kenya.”
Since graduating from BU’s Television Production course, Josie has taken her skills across Africa, producing health-education films and managing media projects in Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, and South Sudan.
Reflecting on her career, she says: “The highlights have been the partners I've collaborated with, the places I’ve had the privilege to work in, and the chance to contribute to creative media that has real and lasting impact.”
Josie credits Bournemouth University for giving her the foundation to take on these global challenges. “Studying at Bournemouth gave me a solid foundation in storytelling, production, and collaboration,” she explains. “The hands-on nature of the course gave me the confidence to produce content independently, while learning to work effectively in teams has been invaluable in international productions.”
The International Emmy Awards will take place on 24 November 2025.
Josie’s Emmy nomination is more than personal recognition — it’s another reminder of the global impact of BU graduates. From award-winning animation to social-impact drama, Bournemouth University alumni are shaping the media, telling stories that matter, and proving that meaningful content can travel the world — sometimes on a shoestring budget.
