March is BU’s Climate Action Month, find out how you can take part!
BU, SUBU and BCP council are offering a range of ways for everyone in our community to explore climate action during the month of March. The aim is to raise awareness of the causes of climate change and to help everyone find ways to contribute to improving the natural environment we all share.
Opportunities for students include practical actions such as recycling roadshows, a litter pick, volunteering in the campus community garden and a vintage clothing sale as well as opportunities to boost your CV by becoming Carbon Literate or taking part in an interactive Climate Fresk session to explore the science of climate change.
We hope to bring everyone in our community together to our sustainability film screening of ‘The People vs Climate Change’ which follows the story of 108 everyday Brits who were asked to help decide how the UK should tackle climate change in a fair way. After the screening there will be a panel discussion with those involved in making the film.
For more ideas on things you can do we are holding an online chat with BU staff about electric cars and electric bikes, where you can share your experiences with them or listen and ask questions to find out more. BCP are holding three webinars on topics including circular economy, solar power and sustainable business and finance which are at lunchtimes during March. If you are an academic you may be interested in the pledging to the SDG Teach In which is an annual campaign by SOS-UK to put the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the heart of education, across all disciplines.
There are plenty of ways you can support Climate Action Month beyond attending one of our scheduled events:
Choose to walk or cycle to university. This supports your health, reduces carbon emissions, and contributes to better local air quality.
Take a walk out in nature. You can record and identify any plants or animals you see using iNaturalist.
Eat more plants. Add more fruits, vegetables, nuts and beans and pulses to your meals. You can use the Carbon Labelling system in our Fusion Building catering outlet to help you to make more informed, sustainable food choices.
Choose to reuse. Remember your reusable water bottle, coffee cup, and use Tupperware to bring your lunch rather than clingfilm or tin foil.
Find out more about what BU are doing to take action for climate change on our website. We are pleased to have reduced emissions by 34% between 2018-19 and 2024-25 which is strong progress towards our target of 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030-31.
