We've have put in place a number of measures to help keep your bike safe from thieves, including secure cycle compounds both campuses, however if your bike is valuable then get it insured.
Please make sure you cycle in safety at all times! This includes not cycling on pavements but using the dedicated cycle lanes.
Cycle compounds
There are secure daily use facilities at both campuses for you to store your bike which are accessed via the use of your student card. Please use the secure cycle compounds in order to best protect your bike, however note that bikes and contents are left entirely at owners risk. To maximise security always use a gold standard D-lock and ensure the cycle compound door is closed behind you. Visit the Facilities on Campus page for more information.
Cycle locks/lights
The BU Travel Plan Group have subsidised some high quality bicycle D locks and lights and these can be bought from the Students’ Union shop at greatly reduced prices. It is imperative to secure your bicycle safely in a designated area on campus. You should ensure that you always use lights when cycling at night. Cycling without lights after dark is unsafe and could lead to a fixed penalty notice being issued to you by the Police.
Cycle lanes and safety
The university has campaigned successfully for a cycle path between the two campuses and this is now in place along the Lansdowne Road, Wimborne Road and Talbot Avenue. There are many other cycle paths around the conurbation and many quiet roads suitable for cycling which often run parallel to main roads. A cycle map of the conurbation showing cycle paths can be obtained free from receptions in Poole House, Bournemouth House and the Executive Business Centre, Students’ Union shops or from Martin Handford.
The University has also produced a video on cycling safely Keep Cycling, Keep Safe in partnership with Bournemouth Borough Council and Dorset Police. Aimed at those unfamiliar with English roads and those for whom cycling is a new activity. It is full of lots of useful information about how to cycle safely on the roads and where to find more information. It’s worth a watch even if you are a confident cyclist.
Highway Code
This Highway Code applies to England, Scotland and Wales. The Highway Code is essential reading for everyone. The most vulnerable road users are pedestrians, particularly children, older or disabled people, cyclists, motorcyclists and horse riders. It is important that all road users are aware of The Highway Code and are considerate towards each other. Please read the sections which specifically apply to cyclists.
