Sharing information on BU Physician Associate Studies Students – MSC Database
The Medical Schools Council (MSC) is the representative body for UK medical schools and maintains a database of medical and physician associate students who have been through a fitness to practise hearing and have subsequently been excluded from that school or university (Member), or have voluntarily removed themselves from the Member, as a result of those proceedings (the MSC Database).
The purpose of the MSC Database is to:
- protect the public from risk of harm in the interests of patient and public safety;
- prevent fraudulent applications to courses which lead to entry to a registered profession in the UK; and
- ensure that Medical Schools and Physician Associate Programme providers are able to identify excluded students and make an informed decision around whether to accept excluded students on to future courses.
As part of our fitness to practise clearance check, to verify your fitness to practice on our Physician Associate Studies course, we will search for and, if held, access the following information about you on the MSC Database:
- Full known name(s) including any changes of name by Deed Poll
- Photograph
- UCAS student ID
- Member student ID
- Date of birth
- Current gender and gender at birth
- Member attended and excluded from
- Date the record was added to the MSC Database, and supporting evidence (e.g. an outcome letter, outcome report or fitness to practise report) (Supporting Evidence). The Supporting Evidence may reveal certain special category personal data, such as health data and information about religious activities. In addition, this Supporting Evidence may contain criminal offence data, including information about criminal offences committed.
If a fitness to practice finding is made by us against you in the future, we will add the information listed above to the MSC Database. This database is accessible to other schools and universities who provide relevant programmes and to the General Medical Council.
You have a right of access to any information held about you on the MSC Database and to correct any errors. If you wish to exercise this right, please contact the MSC.
BU and the MSC rely on the following lawful basis to process your personal data in connection with the MSC database:
- legitimate interests pursuant to Article 6(1)(f) of the UK GDPR; and
- the public interest lawful basis pursuant to Article 9(2)(g) of the UK GDPR, specifically the protecting the public legal basis and unlawful acts or acts of dishonesty basis, as set out in paragraphs 11 and 12 of Schedule 1, Part 2 of the Data Protection Act 2018.
