BU's Centre for Sustainable Business Transformations (CSBT) hosted a UK Consortium on Sustainability Research Symposium - “Sustainable Development in Business Educations Programmes” - on 23rd and 24th January 2025.
The Symposium was chaired by Professor Walter Leal of Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (Germany) and Manchester Metropolitan University, and Professor Marcjanna Augustyn, Head of the CSBT. The Symposium focused on the importance of integrating sustainable development into business education.
Nearly 50 delegates from 12 countries and 5 continents gathered at BU to discuss some of the means via which the principles of sustainable development may be integrated into Higher Business Education.

The presentations (39 over two days, of which 10 are from BU CSBT) demonstrated a variety of best practices and approaches towards integrating sustainability in business programmes, research and innovation.
The Symposium emphasised the need for interdisciplinarity in sustainability business education that fosters a mindset of innovation and adaptability, and therefore, preparing students to lead in a rapidly changing business landscape.
This Symposium was supported by the BU CSBT members who presented and chaired parallel sessions: Dr Reda Shaker Abdelkareem, Dr Esther Anwuzia, Professor Marcjanna Augustyn, Lois Bett, Dr Mariana Consoni Rubio, Dr Tim Ford, Associate Professor Kaouther Kooli, Dr Manuella Picariello, Professor Gelareh Roushan and Dr Mili Shrivastava.
Discussions and networking initiated new collaborative projects, such as publication of an edited volume on ‘Sustainable Development in Business Teaching and Education Programmes’, as part of the Springer Nature’s World Sustainability Series, the leading peer-reviewed book series on sustainability issues. New externally funded research collaboration projects were also discussed.
