Tailgating is when someone follows you through a secure door without using their own ID. This is one of the most common physical security risks. Even when accidental, it can expose sensitive data, equipment, and people to harm.
Why it matters
Unauthorised entry can lead to access to restricted areas and unattended devices, theft of data or equipment, system compromise (e.g. installation of malware), and risks to staff and student safety.
How can you prevent tailgating?
- Don’t swipe others in - everyone must use their own BU ID card
- Make sure secure doors fully close behind you
- Politely direct anyone without ID to reception
- Report suspicious behaviour right away.
Building security reminders
Please ensure all windows and doors are properly secured, especially after working hours when buildings are most vulnerable. Report any faults or concerns immediately.
Report issues:
- Emergency contact: call (01202 9)62222 from a mobile or 222 from a BU landline phone.
- Non-urgent: Call 01202 965001 or email [email protected]
- Or visit any campus reception desk.
Thank you for helping to keep our campus safe.
