Work is now underway on a major upgrade to our outdoor sports facilities, delivering two modern, high‑quality playing surfaces designed to support performance, participation, and community use at BU.
Both our existing astro pitches are being refurbished, with works including:
Recycling of the current synthetic surface
Installation of a new macadam dynamic base
A full upgrade to energy‑efficient LED floodlighting, improving visibility and sustainability.
One pitch will be resurfaced with SIS Grass Synthetic Slide 50, a premium system designed to deliver excellent playability, durability, and comfort for athletes of all levels.
As part of the project, one pitch will be transformed into a vibrant Multi‑Use Games Area (MUGA), featuring line markings for:
Basketball
Football
Tennis
A wide range of other multi‑activity sports.
To support student wellbeing and access to sport, the MUGA will be available to book for free student hire on weekdays until 5pm, encouraging spontaneous play and active lifestyles.
Both the upgraded astro pitch and the new MUGA are scheduled to reopen in the first week of June 2026, ready to welcome users for summer sport activities.
