Turing Scheme

The Turing Scheme has been designed to help you undertake international opportunities as part of your studies at BU.

We are excited to announce that the 2023/24 call is now open for BU students to apply for Turing Scheme funding to support traineeships and short-term study opportunities globally.

If you choose to undertake a study exchange at one of our partner universities, a work overseas opportunity or another international opportunity (such as summer schools, volunteering, language courses, or field trips or short voluntary traineeships), you will be eligible for a grant as a contribution towards the costs associated with living abroad. Provided that you fulfil the conditions of the programme, the money doesn’t have to be repaid.

Please note that early applicants are most likely to receive funding for the destination and duration they request. Later applications may not be eligible if all funding is already used.

Examples of activities that could be funded by the Turing Scheme are short voluntary traineeships, volunteering, summer schools, field trips , language courses as long as they meet the eligibility criteria.

Specific calls for activities for particular subject areas will be promoted by the relevant BU faculty/department.

Finding opportunities overseas

Intercultural competence and cultural preparation

Undertaking an international activity as part of your studies will not only help you boost your employability skills, but it will also enhance your intercultural competence. BU offers fantastic resources to support you prior to your international experience and to help you benefit from cultural preparation activities.

An excellent way to do it is by joining the BU Graduate Skills Programme delivered by CareersBU which is free and open to all current BU students.

We encourage you to look at the Global Citizenship Skills Brightspace site to learn more about the different resources you can access to enhance your intercultural competence and to prepare before you travel overseas.

Language preparation

Drop-in and information sessions

The Global Engagement Team run drop-in sessions every Monday (virtual/in-person) and Wednesday (in-person) afternoons during term time. The sessions are open to all students wanting to find out about opportunities to study and work overseas during your degree, the funding available to support you, and to answer any questions you might have:

Mondays, 1pm - 5pm: Join us online via Microsoft Teams (MS Teams), search "BU Study and Work Overseas Drop-in" in MS Teams or access the session in MS Teams
Mondays, 1pm - 3pm: Visit us in person in the Careers Zone, Bournemouth Gateway Building, Lansdowne Campus
Wednesdays, 1pm - 5pm: Visit us in person at the Careers Zone, in The Hub, Poole House, Talbot Campus

Data protection legislation regulates the use of personal data and sets requirements for protecting it.
