Out of term/hours support

Outside of the Student Medical Centre opening hours you can visit the Talbot Medical Centre in Wallisdown or Northbourne Surgery near Kinson. View map for details. Please call on 01202 636400 or book online using your Student Medical Centre registration details. You can also use the following services:

  • speak to a local pharmacy
  • call NHS 111
  • if it is an emergency please call 999. 


Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Christchurch Hospital

The Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Christchurch Hospital provide health care for the residents of Bournemouth, Christchurch, East Dorset and part of the New Forest.

Poole Hospital

Poole Hospital mainly serves the areas of Poole, East Dorset and Purbeck. It is the major trauma centre for East Dorset and provides a broad range of district hospital care and a number of core services - ear, nose and throat, child health and maternity - for a wider catchment area, including Bournemouth and Christchurch. The hospital also provides specialist services, such as oral surgery and neurological care, for the whole of Dorset and is the Cancer Centre for Dorset.


NHS health A-Z provides health advice and information, the NHS also offers specific advice on dealing with chickenpox and meningitis.


If you have not already received vaccinations for Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR - normally two vaccinations) and Meningitis, we strongly advise you to have them before you arrive at the university. Our Student Medical Centre can also provide these vaccinations once you arrive at BU - you'll need to register with them first and then make an appointment.


There is a charge for all dental treatment, even under the NHS, but you may be entitled to some assistance with payment. For details of dentists, visit the NHS website.

Finding health information online

With such a wide range of information about health issues available online it's important to ensure that you can find good quality and reliable sources of information. 

The NHS has put together a leaflet which provides helpful information about using the NHS website plus guidance about quality and information standards online:

The Reading Agency has some useful information about understanding and managing your health and wellbeing, along with lots of helpful reading; including books about prescriptions for common mental health conditions and dementia.

The public libraries around Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset also have books on prescriptions, you can visit the libraries or find more information on their websites:
