Bournemouth University (BU) is delighted to be screening the new film ‘The Grand Swim’ this Autumn to bring together students, staff and members of the public to learn how we take action against plastic pollution and sewage as a community in Bournemouth and beyond.
This event is part of BU’s Sustainability Screenings series, which aims to bring our community together to progress the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by using film as a tool to educate, reflect, and inspire meaningful action.
‘The Grand Swim’ tells the incredible story of local Dorset swimmer; Oly Rush, and his extraordinary world-record attempt to swim non-stop around Grand Cayman to raise awareness of plastic pollution. The event will include a panel discussion with:
- Oly Rush – Local swimmer, ocean activist, and star of ‘The Grand Swim’
- Professor Rick Stafford - BU Professor of Marine Biology and Conservation
- Emma Teasdale - Litter Free Dorset Coordinator
- Dr Malika Felton – BU Senior Lecturer in Health and Exercise Physiology.
There will also be a showcase of local organisations that you can engage with to find out how you can get involved with protecting our local beaches.
Book you free ticket through Eventbrite and watch the trailer to learn more. This event is open to all BU students, staff, and members of the community.
If you are a local organisation and you are interested in sharing your work and opportunities with the local community as part of this event, please email [email protected]
Tackling single-use plastic at BU
BU is committed to reducing single-use plastic waste across our campuses. Some great examples include our partnership with City to Sea to become the first 'Refill Campus', and the introduction of our own Cup Exchange Scheme in collaboration with our catering provider, Chartwells. BU students can get involved with beach cleans throughout the year, co-ordinated by our Community Wardens; a scheme run by the Students’ Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU), BU, and Arts University Bournemouth (AUB), supported by Bournemouth Borough Council.
