Thursday 12 March is University Mental Health Day and this year the focus is on human connection. Throughout the week, there will be a range of activities across campus designed to help you pause, connect with others, and look after your wellbeing.
Share a message of support
If you follow mental health advocate Ben West on social media, you may have seen his powerful “Reasons to Stay” campaign, which has inspired people around the world to share messages of hope and encouragement.
Inspired by this idea, we’ll be inviting students to write a message of support to someone who might need it. Postcards will be available across campus where you can write a short note of encouragement, kindness, or motivation. These messages will be collected in a post box and displayed on a travelling notice board so others can read them throughout the week.
Keep an eye out for the team with the big white board travelling around campus – you’ll be able to stop by, write a postcard, and read messages shared by other students.
Activities happening across campus
There will also be a number of wellbeing activities taking place in different locations:
University Front Room (Tolpuddle Annex):
- Reflective exercises
- Wellbeing challenges with small prizes.
The Hub, ground floor of Poole House:
- Mindfulness activities
- Creative crafts sessions
Halls of residence:
- A visit from some pygmy goats – a chance to relax and take a break with some very cute company.
Across campus:
Messages of support board – look out for the team with the big white board to get involved.
Student Assistance Programme – download the app
University Mental Health Day is also a great opportunity to learn more about the support available to you while you’re studying.
Our Student Assistance Programme is a free 24-hour confidential helpline and digital resource to support BU students with personal or student-related problems. Support is available in over 200 languages, simply let the helpline know that English isn't your first language, and the advisor will do the rest.
You can download the comprehensive health and wellbeing app called ‘Wisdom’ to manage your wellbeing with a range of tools available 24/7 to support your needs. The app is available to download from both IOS or Android and will require a unique BU code to log in when prompted.
