Bournemouth is generally a relatively safe place to live, but we want to share some guidance about keeping yourself safe when out and about in the local area.
We also recognise the concern amongst some students about the current protests in Bournemouth related to immigrants and migrant hotels. While these have, to date, been peaceful demonstrations and we support the right to freedom of expression, we know that many people find these activities worrying.
We are currently meeting with SUBU and the police each week to discuss any points of concern which may affect the BU community. This also gives the opportunity for the police to share latest guidance or advice about safety in the local area.
If you experience any victimisation or are the subject of a hate crime, please report this to the police. If the incident happens on one of our campuses, please let us know so that we can support you.
On campus, our security and campus patrol teams provide support 24/7. In an emergency, please call 01202 962222 for assistance. You can find this number on the back of your student ID card. We also have a university police team and there will be drop-in sessions fortnightly in the Student Centre at Talbot Campus with our Police Community Support Officer running from late September.
At BU, we value freedom of speech and our inclusive environment where respect for one another is at the heart of our values. Please do be respectful of members of our community, showing extra care for one another, especially those who may be affected by these events.
There are a range of resources on the website to support during your time at BU, including contact details for our services, guidance for looking after your wellbeing and a comprehensive list of wellbeing resources. Our Faith & Reflection service also offers a quiet space on campus. If you would like specific help, please get in contact with the AskBU Team.
