The rich variety of nature provides us with the food we eat, the air we breathe and countless moments of personal inspiration spent in forests and gardens, exploring beaches and rivers, or listening to a simple birdsong in a quiet moment.

Many of these can be enjoyed on our doorstep – Dorset has a wealth of beautiful outdoor spaces for us all to explore, from the Dorset heathland, the Purbecks and the beaches of the Jurassic Coast, to the New Forest and the local Bourne Valley nature reserve.

Bournemouth University have pledged to be a Nature Positive University. This means we have pledged to prevent harm, protect and restore species and ecosystems that are affected by BU and its activities, and we want to further develop our actions and work together with other institutions to promote nature on our campuses, in our supply chains and within our local community.

What can I do?

Relax
It’s been proven that 2 hours spent in nature per week can improve your health and wellbeing. Whatever you do, enjoy and take in the natural world
Plant
Houseplants can improve air quality and our wellbeing. Peace lilies, snake plants and aloe vera are great ones to start with
Grow
Meet new friends and learn how to grow at the SUBU Community Garden
Pick
Keep our parks and beaches clean by litter picking. Whether by yourself or an event led by SUBU, let's keep our spaces beautiful
Count
The BU BioBlitz, Big Garden Birdwatch, Bumblebee Conservation Trust and Big Butterfly Count are examples of nature surveys that rely on citizen scientists, so you can contribute to research and have fun
Eat
From potatoes to pineapples, you can grow loads of fruit and veg from the bits we don't eat - try it out to reduce food waste and enjoy growing
