Ruth Harley, BA (Hons) Event Management graduate, placement at Millbrook Venues.
Planning and putting on a live event in my second year helped give me the skills and knowledge required for my placement."
Three words to describe your placement
Unique. Fun. Challenging.
Two tips for placement students
Build positive relationships. Don’t get complacent – always show enthusiasm.
The most satisfying part of your placement
Running two large events. One was an exhibition, the other a product launch. Running these was really satisfying – it’s given me the experience to be an event manager when I graduate. It was my job to brief staff and manage all aspects of the events, ensuring the clients’ needs were met to a high standard.
The most enjoyable part of your placement
I ran Aston Martin events and was given the opportunity to drive an Aston Martin Vanquish – on the Mile Straight, at 160mph! The professional driver then took me around the Alpine route. This is just one experience that’s been really fun – there have been loads more. I’m extremely grateful for this unique placement.
One example of how your course prepared you for the placement
The BU course is really practical. Planning and putting on a live event in my second year helped give me the skills and knowledge required for my placement.
Future career goals
I’d like to work on experiential events. I enjoy events that create an impact on people and offer unique experiences. In my second year, I studied abroad in Macau, China – this was a great experience, as I love learning about different cultures. Working abroad would be fun, so I’m looking to work in international events.
