Important considerations to take into account when planning your work placement overseas.

Health and travel cover

BU offers comprehensive travel cover to all outgoing students. Additionally, if you are travelling to an EU country you should apply for an EHIC or GHIC card, which enables you to obtain medical assistance for free. If you are an EU passport holder you will be able to use your EHIC card when travelling to an EU country. If you are a UK passport holder and/or do not have an EU passport, please read the information about how to apply for a UK GHIC card. If you need to register with a UK health centre, contact the Student Medical Centre for further information on registering with them. As a BU student, you can apply for your EHIC/GHIC card using the BU Letter Request Form.

Please note: you should fully check and read the BU Travel Cover Summary, and depending on personal considerations or specific health issues, you may need to purchase additional insurance cover. Information for UK nationals on visiting Europe from 1 January 2021 can be found on the website.

Flights or other forms of travel

Travel arrangements are your responsibility. To benefit from lower prices we suggest you book your travel as soon as you receive your official confirmation of your placement. Please note this might mean purchasing your flights before you receive Turing Scheme funding. Turing Scheme is designed to cover specific costs related to your exchange. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds will receive a Travel Grant from the Turing Scheme. Find out more about Turing Scheme funding and the eligibility requirements on our Turing Scheme webpage.

Visa (if applicable)

Depending on your nationality and your placement destination, you may be required to obtain a visa. Please check the GoinGlobal web pages as they contain lots of practical information per country. Further guidance may also be offered by your placement company. They are best placed to advise as they will have the latest information regarding legal and immigration matters in your destination country.
