A helping hand
The government offers postgraduate student loans paid directly to eligible students* over three instalments during the academic year. The loan amount for 2023/24 entry is up to a maximum value of £12,167 (non-means tested). The figure for 2024/25 entry has not yet been announced.
If you're not sure you can afford further study, you might be interested to hear about the additional support available. BU graduates can benefit from:
- 20% tuition fee reduction for being a BU graduate*
- Non-repayable scholarships from £2,000* when you achieve a 2:1 or above.
Eligible postgraduate Doctoral students* can apply for a doctoral loan to contribute to overall costs. For 2023/24 entry the loan amount is up to £28,673. The figures for 2024/25 entry are not yet available.

Complete a Fast Track application form specifically for current students looking to study further. There's no need to make a separate application!
Some of our postgraduate taught degrees have a January intake as well as September, giving you more flexibility over when you study.
For postgraduate research study, the application deadlines are as follows:
- For the autumn term (starting in September) - 30 June
- For the spring term (starting in January) - 31 October
- For the summer term (starting in April) - 31 January.
We recommend that you submit your application as soon as possible, ahead of the deadline.
